2둘이면 one ~ the other, 셋이면 one ~ another ~ the other

처음 하나는 one, 정해진 마지막 하나는 the other이다. 셋일 때 두 번째 하나는 '또 다른 하나'인 another이다.

Minho owns two umbrellas. One stays in his locker, and the other stays at home.
Ms. Kang gave us three tasks. One was a quiz, another was a report, and the other was a poster.

3the others: 정해진 무리의 나머지 전부 구별

수가 정해진 무리에서 하나〔일부〕를 빼고 나머지 전부는 the others(= the other + 복수명사)이다. 넷 이상이면 one ~ another ~ the others도 된다. 셋이라도 남은 것이 둘이면 the others이다.

Tom has five cousins. One lives in Canada, and the others live in Daejeon. (= the other four)
The bus has 30 seats. Some are taken, and the others are empty.

4some ~ others: 정해지지 않은 무리 중3 핵심

사람들 일반처럼 수가 정해지지 않은 무리에서 '어떤 사람들은 ~, 다른 사람들은 …'은 some ~ others이다. others는 나머지 전부가 아니라 다른 일부이므로 the를 붙이지 않는다.

Some people sing in the shower, and others hum on the subway.
Some kids collect stickers. Others collect coins.

5형태와 동사의 수, one과 it 함정

others = other + 복수명사이다. other 혼자는 대명사로 쓰지 않는다. 주어일 때 One·Another·The other + 단수동사, Others·The others + 복수동사이다. one은 앞 명사와 같은 종류의 아무 하나(복수 ones), it은 바로 그것이다(중1 Unit 10).

Of the four tickets, one is for Dad, and the others are for Ben's team.
My bike lock broke, so I bought a new one. (같은 종류 하나)
Dad found my old lock and fixed it. (바로 그것)

others vs the others

Some teens jog at night, and others swim at dawn. 사람들 일반 중 다른 일부
Our club has nine kids. Four jog, and the others swim. 정해진 아홉 명 중 나머지 전부
Jun has two pens. One is red, and the other is black. 남은 것이 하나면 the other

부분부정: not all, not every, not always

Not all of the puppies are brown. 모두 갈색인 것은 아니다 (일부는 갈색이 아니다)
None of the puppies are brown. 하나도 갈색이 아니다 (전체부정)
Jun is not always late. 준이 항상 늦는 것은 아니다
