1개념 정리
1관계부사: 선행사에 맞춰 when·where·why·how를 고른다 시험 단골
관계부사는 접속사 + 부사 역할을 하며, 앞의 명사(선행사)를 꾸미는 절을 이끈다. 관계부사 뒤에는 주어·목적어를 다 갖춘 완전한 절이 온다. 어떤 관계부사를 쓸지는 선행사의 종류로 정한다.

2관계부사 vs 관계대명사: 뒤 절이 완전한가 함정
장소·시간 명사 뒤라고 무조건 where·when을 쓰지 않는다. 뒤 절에 주어나 목적어가 빠져 있으면 선행사가 그 자리를 채우므로 관계대명사 which〔that〕를 쓴다. 뒤 절이 완전하면 관계부사이다.
Tongyeong is the town where Emma's grandma lives. (lives 뒤가 완전한 절)
Tongyeong is the town which〔that〕 Emma loves most. (loves의 목적어가 없다)

3관계부사 = 전치사 + which 서술형 단골
관계부사는 전치사 + which로 바꿀 수 있다. 전치사는 선행사와 함께 쓰는 것을 고른다(in the gym, on Monday, in 2025, at noon). which만 쓰면 전치사를 절 끝에 둔다.

주의 관계부사 안에 전치사의 뜻이 들어 있다. the gym where we practice in ✗ / in where ✗ / 두 문장을 이을 때 there·in the gym 같은 부사(구)도 지운다.
4the way how는 쓰지 않는다, 선행사·관계부사의 생략 시험 단골
the way와 how는 함께 쓰지 않는다. 둘 중 하나만 쓰거나 the way that, the way in which로 쓴다.
This is the way how Ben fixes a flat tire. ✗

the place, the time, the reason 같은 선행사는 생략하고 관계부사만 쓸 수 있다. 반대로 관계부사(주로 when·why)를 생략하기도 하고, when·where·why 대신 that을 쓰기도 한다.
That's (the reason) why Jiho skipped breakfast. / Sunday is the day (when) we clean the house.
5계속적 용법: , where · , when
콤마 뒤의 where·when은 앞 명사에 정보를 덧붙인다. , where = and there, , when = and then으로 해석한다. 콤마 뒤에는 that을 쓰지 않는다(→ Unit 14).

의문사 where vs 관계부사 where
I wonder where Tori is hiding. 선행사 없음, '어디에' → 의문사(간접의문문)

관계부사 뒤는 완전한 절이다
관계부사(= 전치사 + which) 뒤 절에는 빠진 주어·목적어가 없다. 절 끝에 전치사가 남거나 동사의 목적어가 없으면 관계부사가 아니라 관계대명사 which〔that〕를 쓴다.
스스로 점검
- 선행사(시간·장소·이유·방법)에 맞게 when·where·why·how를 쓸 수 있다.
- 뒤 절이 완전한지 보고 관계부사와 관계대명사 which〔that〕를 구별할 수 있다.
- 관계부사를 전치사 + which로 바꾸고, 전치사를 겹쳐 쓰지 않는다.
- the way how를 쓰지 않고, the way나 how 중 하나만 쓸 수 있다.
- 선행사나 관계부사를 생략한 문장(That's why …)을 이해하고 쓸 수 있다.
- 의문사 when·where·why와 관계부사를 구별하고, 콤마 뒤 where·when을 해석할 수 있다.
