1개념 정리

1I wish + 가정법 과거: 지금 이룰 수 없는 소망 심화

이 단원은 심화 단원이다. Unit 17·18의 가정법을 Without, I wish, as if 표현에 적용한다. I wish + 주어 + 과거형은 지금 사실과 반대되는 소망으로 '~라면 좋을 텐데'로 해석한다. be동사는 were가 원칙이고, 주어가 1인칭·3인칭 단수면 was도 인정한다. could·would + 원형도 쓸 수 있다.

I wish I were on Ms. Han's relay team. (〔was〕도 가능)
= I'm sorry (that) I'm not on Ms. Han's relay team.
Minji wishes Coco didn't bark at every delivery truck.

2I wish + 가정법 과거완료: 지난 일에 대한 아쉬움 시험 단골

I wish + 주어 + had p.p.는 과거 사실과 반대되는 소망으로 '~했더라면 좋을 텐데'로 해석한다. now·today면 과거형, yesterday·last ~·then이면 had p.p.를 쓴다.

I wish I had charged my phone last night.
= I'm sorry (that) I didn't charge my phone last night.

3as if + 과거 / had p.p.: 마치 ~인 것처럼 구별

주절보다 이전

Mia talks about the show as if she had seen it.

주의 주절이 과거(talked)여도 같은 때면 as if 뒤는 그대로 과거형(were)이다. He looks as if he is tired.처럼 사실일 수 있는 일에는 현재형도 쓰며, 틀린 문장이 아니다.

Without〔But for〕 자체는 시제가 없으므로 주절의 형태로 때를 정한다. If there were no + 명사도 같은 뜻이다. Had it not been for는 If it had not been for의 도치이다.

5직설법 ↔ 가정법 전환 시험 단골

시제는 한 단계 앞으로, 긍정 ↔ 부정은 뒤집는다. I wish ↔ I'm sorry (that), as if ↔ In fact, Without ↔ If it were not for이다.

I wish I could drive. = I'm sorry I can't drive.
Tom acts as if he were busy. = In fact, Tom isn't busy.
Emma talks as if she hadn't broken the vase. = In fact, Emma broke the vase.

6It's (high) time + 과거: 이제 ~할 때이다

It's time we went back to class. (= It's time for us to go back to class.)
It's high time Ben fixed his alarm clock. (should fix도 쓰지만 시험은 과거형)

때를 보고 과거와 과거완료를 고른다

I wish I knew Emma's number. 지금 모른다
I wish I had known Emma's number then. 그때 몰랐다
Jiho talked as if he were sleepy. 말하던 그때 졸리지 않았다
Jiho talked as if he had slept all day. 그 전에 하루 종일 자지 않았다
