1개념 정리

1원급 비교와 배수 비교 시험 단골

(중1 Unit 23 복습) as + 원급 + as는 '~만큼 …한', not as(so) + 원급 + as는 '~만큼 …하지 않은'이다. 배수(twice, three times …)와 half는 첫 번째 as 앞에 써서 '~의 몇 배만큼 …한'을 나타낸다. three times 이상은 배수 + 비교급 + than으로도 쓴다.

The new school library is three times as large as the old one.
= The new school library is three times larger than the old one. 새 학교 도서관은 예전 도서관보다 세 배 크다.
Ben's backpack is half as heavy as Mia's. Ben의 배낭은 Mia의 배낭 무게의 절반이다.

주의 ~~as three times big as~~, ~~as taller as~~ ✗ → three times as big as, as tall as ○. '두 배'는 twice as ~ as로 쓴다.

2가능한 한 ~하게: as ~ as possible

as + 원급 + as possible = as + 원급 + as + 주어 + can. 문장의 동사가 과거이면 could를 쓴다.

Mix the paint as gently as possible. = Mix the paint as gently as you can. 물감을 가능한 한 부드럽게 섞어라.
Jun opened Bori's cage as quietly as he could. 준은 보리의 우리를 가능한 한 조용히 열었다.

주의 Jun opened the cage as quietly as ~~he can~~ ✗ → opened가 과거이므로 he could ○

3not as ~ as ↔ 비교급: 방향을 바꿔 쓴다 해석 주의

A is not as ~ as B는 'B가 더 ~하다'는 뜻이므로 B is 비교급 than A로 바꾼다. A is less + 원급 + than B(A가 B보다 덜 ~하다)로도 쓴다.

Tori is not as heavy as Coco. = Coco is heavier than Tori. = Tori is less heavy than Coco. Tori는 Coco만큼 무겁지 않다.

주의 ~~Tori is heavier than Coco.~~ ✗ 주어를 그대로 두려면 반대말을 쓴다: Tori is lighter than Coco. ○

4비교급 강조: much, even, far, a lot, still

Ms. Kang's new lab is far brighter than the old one. 강 선생님의 새 실험실은 예전 실험실보다 훨씬 더 밝다.
The second quiz was even more confusing than the first. 두 번째 퀴즈는 첫 번째보다 훨씬 더 헷갈렸다.

주의 very는 원급만 꾸민다: very bright ○ / ~~very brighter~~ ✗

주의 두 절 모두 the + 비교급: ~~Warmer the water gets, …~~ ✗ / ~~more popular and more popular~~ ✗. the sooner, the better(빠를수록 좋다)는 굳어진 표현이다.
