1개념 정리

1시제 일치: 주절이 과거면 종속절도 과거로 심화

이 단원은 교과서 한 권에서만 자세히 다루는 심화 단원이다. 주절의 동사가 과거이면 종속절의 동사도 과거 또는 과거완료로 맞춘다. 조동사도 will → would처럼 과거형으로 바꾼다(can, may도 같다).

Ms. Han thinks the race will start soon. → Ms. Han thought the race would start soon.
Jun knows Bori can open his cage. → Jun knew Bori could open his cage.
Minho told me he was〔is〕 fifteen. (지금도 사실이면 현재형도 된다)

2시제 일치의 예외 함정

진리·속담·지금도 계속되는 습관은 주절이 과거여도 현재형, 역사적 사실은 과거형(과거완료 ✗)으로 쓴다. 시험에서는 이 규칙대로 답한다.

Ms. Kang told us that sound travels slower than light. (진리)
Grandma said that practice makes perfect. (속담)
Daeun said her uncle opens his shop at nine every day. (지금의 습관)
Mr. Oh told us that the Korean War ended in 1953. (역사적 사실)

3평서문: said (that) / said to + O → told + O (that) 시험 단골

따옴표 속 말을 전할 때는 ① 전달동사 ② 인칭 ③ 시제 ④ 시간·장소의 말을 바꾼다. that은 생략할 수 있다. 말한 때·곳과 전하는 때·곳이 다르므로 시간·장소의 말도 바꾼다.

Jiho said to me, "I am hungry now." → Jiho told me (that) he was hungry then.

4의문문: asked (+ O) + 의문사〔if·whether〕 + 주어 + 동사 비중 1위

said to + O는 asked + O로 바꾸고, 물음표를 없앤 뒤 주어 + 동사 어순으로 쓴다. 의문사가 없으면 if〔whether〕를 쓴다. (→ Unit 20, 중2 Unit 24)

Mia said to Ben, "Where did you get that cap?" → Mia asked Ben where he had gotten〔got〕 that cap.
Ms. Han said to Daeun, "Are you ready?" → Ms. Han asked Daeun if〔whether〕 she was ready.

주의 asked Ben where ~~did he get~~ … ✗ / asked Daeun ~~that~~ she was … ✗

5명령문: told〔asked〕 + O + (not) to-v 구별

지시·명령은 told, 부탁(please, Could you ~?)은 asked를 쓴다. 부정 명령문(Don't ~)은 not to-v로 바꾼다.

Mr. Oh said to us, "Turn off your phones." → Mr. Oh told us to turn off our phones.
Emma said to Jun, "Please don't tell anyone." → Emma asked Jun not to tell anyone.

say · tell · ask 뒤에 오는 말

Jun said (that) … / Jun said to me (that) … say 뒤의 사람은 to + 사람 (said me ✗)
Jun told me (that) … / Jun told me to … tell 뒤에는 바로 사람 (told that ✗)
Jun asked me if〔what〕 … / Jun asked me to … 질문·부탁 (asked that ✗)
